The UAE has recently introduced new laws that make punishments much stricter for sexual offence crimes, especially those involving minors and prostitution. These changes are important for expats and tourists to understand, as UAE laws apply to everyone living in or visiting the country. At the ask consultancy, known as the best legal firm in Dubai, we believe legal awareness helps people stay safe and avoid serious trouble.
One of the biggest changes in the law is about sexual offence cases involving minors. Any person aged 18 or above who has sexual relations with someone under 18 can now face at least 10 years in prison and a fine of AED 100,000 or more. This applies even if the younger person says they agreed.
The law clearly states that consent is only recognized if the person is at least 16 years old. For expats and tourists, this is very important because age-of-consent rules may be different in other countries, but UAE law is strict and does not allow excuses.
If both people involved are under 18, the case is handled under juvenile laws. The focus in such situations is on guidance and rehabilitation rather than harsh punishment.
The new amendments also tighten rules around prostitution and debauchery. Any sexual offence related to encouraging, inviting, or forcing someone into prostitution can lead to at least two years in prison and heavy fines. If a minor is involved, the punishment becomes even more severe.
For visitors and residents, it’s important to understand that behavior considered normal elsewhere may be illegal in the UAE and treated as a serious sexual offence.
The law now allows authorities to closely examine people convicted of serious sexual offence crimes before they are released from prison. During the last six months of their sentence, offenders may undergo medical and psychological evaluations to see if they are likely to commit another crime.
If authorities believe the person still poses a risk, the court may order extra safety measures after release. These can include rehabilitation programs, therapy, supervision, or electronic monitoring. The goal is to protect the public while helping offenders reform.
In some special cases, courts may suspend a prison sentence if there is strong evidence that the offender has reformed. However, if the person breaks any conditions or commits another sexual offence, the suspension can be canceled immediately, and they will return to prison.
